Soft Matter funded on Kickstarter

You guys has made a dream come true for us, but more importantly for debut writer Pär Karlsson. We are all eternally grateful for your support during this campaign.

And what a ride it has been! Not only will the novel see the light of day, but all of our stretch goals have been reached: a foreword, a bookmark and last but not least five illustrations by the inimitable Joakim Ericsson.

While Pär puts the final touches to his story and Joakim starts working on the illustrations, The Dark North Team will now get going on our to-do list, with means printing books and art prints, get our trusted distributor up to speed and the wonderful task of creating medical reports and mystery boxes.

We really love you guys for making this happen, and promise to keep you posted every step of the way.

New Science Fiction Novel from The Dark North

Following the successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter for the narrative art book The Dark North – Volume 1, we are now dipping our toes in uncharted waters with science fiction novel Soft Matter, by Swedish debut writer Pär Karlsson.

It’s achilling story about a Swedish family, where the son – a soldier – ends up in an irreversible coma, and the father – a respected neurosurgeon – loses everything but his mind. A top secret medical facility in the United States offers them a startling solution, and their decisions will end up affecting them for the rest of their lives.

In a stunning blend of science fact and fiction, psychology and existentialism, Soft Matter explores what it is to be human, even if your body isn’t your own.

2018 marks the 200 year anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein – the first science fiction novel – and we at the Dark North only saw it fitting to bring these eternal questions into new light. Pär’s tragic – but also inspiring – tale of a family in ruins makes something of a Frankenstein for the 21st century.

For Soft Matter, Pär did extensive research in the fields of neuroscience and psychology and put these scientific fields in the face of a terrifying opportunity. The result is a mesmerizing story, with a premise that may very well end up a reality in our near future.

The Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for Soft Matter will go live on April 11.

Dark Horse Comics releases The Dark North

On September 27th, 2017, renowned publisher and comic book industry giant Dark Horse Comics will release The Dark North worldwide. The release presents an opportunity for a wider audience to experience some of Sweden’s premier concept artists and illustrators.

The concept of The Dark North was created one late night in a warehouse filled with books and games. In the fall of 2015, the concept was realized, as a successful Kickstarter was held allowing Charles Wood Publishing AB to release the book in September 2016. One year later, Dark Horse Comics will release the book, with a new gorgeous cover. This is the next step for The Dark North, in our quest to bring the northern darkness to all corners of the world.

The Dark North at the Göteborg Book Fair

Lukas Thelin and Per-Erik Sundström at the Göteborg Book Fair.

As you might have seen on our Facebook page, The Dark North was at the Göteborg Book Fair during the past weekend. Four out of five artists signed copies of the books, and three of the project team members were there to push the book.

The Book Fair truly was the experience of a lifetime. It was a great opportunity to meet fans both old and new, and showcase The Dark North. Seeing our book surrounded by a whole table of fantastic art books from Johan Egerkrans, Simon Stålenhag and Peter Bergting was truly awe inspiring. Only a few years ago these kinds of projects would not have been possible, and it is thanks to you, the fans and backers of these books, that they are a reality today.

Thank you to our friends at SF-bokhandeln for making our participation at the fair possible, and for their immense support of our project.

”The Dark North - Volume 1” is released!

September 22nd marks the official release of the retail version of The Dark North - Volume 1, and the book is now available in our web shop and in SF-bokhandeln in Stockholm, Göteborg and Malmö.

It has been a long, winding road from the inception of the project to the finished book, with many obstacles that have been circumvented by our team and our artists. It has been a great learning experience that has prepared us for future endeavors.

- We are extremely proud of the finished product. The result of our labor is a book that we believe lives up to and even exceeds our expectations, and we truly hope that it will speak to you as well, says Magnus Lekberg, creative director at Charles Wood Publishing.

The Dark North team would like to take this opportunity to once again thank our Kickstarter backers who have made this project possible. We are thankful beyond words.

So what is up next for The Dark North?
Members of our team and some of our artists are at the Göteborg Book Fair this weekend, showcasing the book alongside our friends at SF-bokhandeln, Sweden’s premiere science fiction and fantasy bookstore. We are also working on one of our Kickstarter stretch goals, which is a roleplaying setting in one of The Dark North worlds.
There are also other exciting things in the works, but for know those things are shrouded in the northern darkness. As soon as the veil lifts, we will let you know.

The day is finally here! Printing commences tomorrow Wednesday, August 17th.

Our creative director Magnus is heading down to the printers to oversee the print run! Due to paper delivery delays we are a couple of days behind schedule, but our printers Strokirk-Landström have worked really hard to cut all the lead times in the entire printing and binding process. So all in all, we got some extra time to fine-tune everything and are now still aiming to make up all the lost time and make deliveries to our Kickstarter backers as planned by the end of August and the first weeks of September.

Having come this far, we are of course extremely excited! We are extremely proud with the results so far, and now really look forward to sharing the book with you all!

The official release of the book is set for September 13th. We will then ship all pre-order copies of the book. About a week later, the book will be available in selected retail stores.

We will be visiting a number of venues and events showcasing the book and all the artwork this autumn. We hope we'll see you and get to talk to as many of you as possible!

All the best,

/The Dark North Team

Renowned writer and director Clive Barker joins The Dark North

As one of our campaign's unlocked stretch goals, we promised that the foreword to The Dark North Volume 1 would be written by a distinguished contributor to the fantasy, science-fiction and horror scene.

Well today, we are very proud to give you - Clive Barker!

Clive Barker – writer, artist and filmmaker, perhaps best known for Hellraiser, Nightbreed and Abarat. Clive Barker has been a creative force in Hollywood since the 1980’s, and is one of the most prominent and influential writers and directors in horror and urban fantasy. His signed manuscript for “The Hellbound Heart” is in the top ten most expensive books list, along with signed novels by Ernest HemingwayJames Joyce and Herman Melville. Barker’s work has been adapted into over 30 films, as well as countless comics and video games. He was executive producer on the Oscar winning film “Gods and Monsters” with Ian McKellen.

– That Clive, with his unique vision, wonderful imagination and life-long experience of fantastic art in all its forms, chooses to collaborate on this book will make The Dark North something much bigger than we could possibly have hoped for, says Magnus Lekberg, creative director. Having spent a considerable part of my life in his worlds, I have a hard time thinking of someone who would be more fitting to join ours.

– In the wake of the so called ”Swedish gaming phenomenon” comes an abundance of creativity, and more so in art than anything else, Magnus continues. In this book, the immensely talented illustrators and concept artists creating all those amazing worlds we live in countless of hours when we play, get a chance to share new, fantastic and often personal stories set in The Dark North. Together with Clive, I’m certain we are about to forge something that will resonate not only with a Scandinavian audience, but with the rest of the world as well.

Clive Barker was born 1952 in Liverpool, England, and currently lives in Los Angeles. Among many other things he’s a filmmaker, painter and the writer of close to 30 books, with ”The Scarlet Gospels” (2015) being the latest.
